“Can we call that treason? Why not.”
President Donald Trump continued to berate Democrats during a speech Monday for not being enthusiastic during his first State of the Union address last week.
Trump spoke in Ohio and touted his tax reform bill by bringing multiple voters on stage to explain what they will do with the extra money in their pockets thanks, the tax cuts — but he often turned his attention to Democrats, specifically those who appeared unimpressed during his address to Congress last week.
“They were told don’t even make a facial movement,” Trump said, complaining that Democrats wouldn’t clap or smile after he noted that African American and Hispanic unemployment had reached record lows during his first year in office. “This is not me. This is the charts, the polls,” he explained.
“We have the lowest in the history of our country. Dead silence, not a smile.” Trump added: “It was a game, you know they play games. They were told don’t even make a facial movement.”
The president explained that during his speech he tried not to pay attention to the Democratic side of the House because it was distracting, instead, he focused on Republicans, who were “going totally crazy, wild, they loved everything.”
But Democrats, Trump said, “were like, death. And un-American. Un-American.”
“Somebody said treasonous,” Trump said. “I mean, yeah, I guess. Why not? Can we call that treason? Why not?”
Last week, Trump attacked Democrats for their demeanor during the State of the Union while speaking to House and Senate Republicans at their annual retreat in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. “They sat there stone cold, no smile, no applause. You would have thought that on that one, they would have sort of at least clapped a little bit,” Trump railed.
“Which tells you, perhaps, they’d rather see us not do well than see our country do great, and that’s not good.”
The White House has been critical of Democrats’ reaction to Trump’s State of the Union address. White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders blasted House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Wednesday for not smiling during the event.
“I think Nancy Pelosi looks like that all the time,” Sanders told CNN. ”I think she should smile a lot more often. I think the country would be better for it.”
