He’s moved on from Hillary.
It’s all Obama’s fault.
President Trump called on Attorney General Jeff Sessions Wednesday to open an investigation into the Obama administration’s handling of Russian meddling in the 2016 election.
“Question: If all of the Russian meddling took place during the Obama Administration, right up to January 20th, why aren’t they the subject of the investigation? Why didn’t Obama do something about the meddling?” Trump wrote.
Trump — in his haste to instruct the Justice Department to target his predecessor — then spelled his hand-picked top prosecutor’s name wrong.
Trump claims he is ‘much tougher on Russia than Obama’
“Why aren’t Dem crimes under investigation? Ask Jeff Session!”
Trump later reissued his tweet with Sessions spelled correctly.
After special counsel Robert Mueller unsealed indictments against 13 Russians and three Kremlin-linked companies for their role in meddling in the 2016 election on Friday, Trump fired off a series of tweets over the weekend — placing the blame on Obama.
“Obama was President, knew of the threat, and did nothing,” he tweeted on Sunday. “Why didn’t he do something about Russian meddling?” he asked on Monday.
Trump has repeatedly criticized the Justice Department and the FBI for their handling of the investigation into Russian interference.
Mueller was appointed after Sessions recused himself from all Russia-related probes due to his work on the Trump campaign.
As Mueller’s probe reaches deeper inside the White House and more of his former campaign members have faced criminal charges, Trump has repeatedly lashed out.
Prior to setting his sights on Obama, Trump often called on Sessions and the FBI to investigate Hillary Clinton, his former Democratic rival.
Sessions, in response, has tasked senior prosecutors with exploring whether alleged misdeeds by Clinton, including using a private email server during her time as secretary of state, warrant further investigation.
“With all of the illegal acts that took place in the Clinton campaign & Obama Administration, there was never a special counsel appointed!” Trump wondered last May.
During testimony before the House judiciary committee, Sessions pushed back against calls that a special prosecutor be appointed to look into the FBI’s handling of the Clinton email probe.
Trump turned to tweeting about investigating Democrats in October hours after Mueller unsealed two indictments and a guilty plea against former Trump campaign officials.
The President has been haunted by Mueller’s probe as it has expanded and looks into whether anyone in the campaign colluded with the Kremlin. He has called the work of top FBI and Justice officials a “disgrace” and accused them of political bias.
Trump has also repeatedly downplayed and has publicly doubted Russian efforts to influence the 2016 contest.
The White House defended Trump, saying that he has been tougher on Russia than his predecessor despite evidence to the contrary.
White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said Tuesday that an example of President Trump being “tough” with Russia would be revealed “in the coming days.”
Trump has previously criticized Obama for not doing more to prevent meddling.
During the 2016 campaign, Obama called out Russia for political interference when much less was known about it and followed up after the election by expelling 35 Russian diplomats suspected of being intelligence officers.
Trump has yet to impose sanctions overwhelmingly passed by Congress last year and missed deadlines to identify which Russian individuals and entities would be on the sanctions list.
Last month, the White House decided against implementing the sanctions and instead published a list of already known Russian oligarchs.
