The alert was sent by an app about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday but according to Accuweather, it was just a test.
Did you get that tsunami warning this morning and spit out your coffee?
Don’t worry. It was just a test.
But it didn’t stop Accuweather from sending out alerts to Treasure Coast residents.
“We don’t know what caused it to go across the site. Nothing went across NOAA weather radio or our site. Others may have picked on it,” said Derric Weitlich, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Melbourne.
“Of course you don’t want a test going out as an alert. We started hearing about it from some of our managers.”
It wasn’t until 30 minutes after the initial alert was sent that the weather agency sent a tweet saying it was a test.
The National Weather Service Tsunami Warning this morning was a TEST. No Tsunami warning is in effect for the East Coast of the U. S.
The National Weather Service also made sure to alert its Twitter followers that the message was sent erroneously.
904AM: A Tsunami Warning was mistakenly sent by an app. There is no Tsunami Warning in effect. It was just a Tsunami test message.
