Acer announced the availability of the latest 2018 edition of the Acer Swift 5 ultra-thin and ultra-light notebook in India. This is a 14-inch Full HD laptop that features the latest 8th gen Intel Core processors. While this might not be the world’s thinnest laptop (that title is held by its sibling, the Acer Swift 7), it is still incredibly slim at 14.9mm. Also, the Acer Swift 5 is one of the lightest 14-inch laptops on the market weighing in at just 970g.
Commenting on the launch, the CMO and consumer business head of Acer India, Mr Chandrahas Panigrahi said, “We are ecstatic with the newest addition – Swift 5 to our range of Swift series laptops in India. This is another record breaker by being one of the lightest laptops in the world at an unbelievable 970gms. Cramming so much technology into such a light weight body showcases our engineering and design capabilities, and we are sure Swift 5 appeals to a wide variety of people looking for a portable, light-weight powerhouse laptop.”
The Acer Swift 5 will be launching in India for the price of Rs. 79,999. It will be available for purchase via Acer’s exclusive stores and other offline leading retailers. Acer has not yet provided details regarding when the laptops will be available for purchase through online sellers. We expect them to hit virtual shelves in the coming months.
In terms of technical specifications, the Acer Swift 5 boasts a 14-inch Full HD 1920×1080 pixels LED-backlit IPS display that supports multi-touch. The notebook is powered by latest 8th gen Intel Core processors along with Intel UHD Graphics 620. Acer has not specified whether the variant in India comes with the Intel Core i5 8250U or the Intel Core i7 8550U. The company has revealed that the variant releasing in India will come with 8GB of DDR4 RAM and 512GB of fast SSD storage.
The rest of the build of this laptop is same as the previous year’s model with a 3.5mm headphone jack on the left, and a USB 3.1 Type C port, two USB 3.0 ports, full HDMI out, and power point on the right. Being an ultra-thin notebook, there isn’t enough room for a disk drive or Ethernet port, which shouldn’t be an issue for most modern users.
The first standout feature of the laptop is its extremely thin and portable design. Weighing in just under 1Kg makes it ideal for carrying around without worrying about too much heft. The build quality of the laptop is also remarkable with ultra-light magnesium-lithium alloys used for the top and bottom panel, and sturdier magnesium-aluminium alloys used for the palm rest area. The dimensions of the laptop itself give it a traditional 13-inch laptop footprint while still containing a 14-inch panel.
In terms of software, the Acer Swift 5 will ship with Windows 10 preinstalled. Acer has included the Acer Colour Intelligence technology which is said to optimise screen colour, brightness and saturation. This helps the laptop’s screen reproduce more vivid and vibrant colours. The Swift 5 is also equipped with Dolby Audio Premium and Acer TrueHarmony to deliver clear and crisp sound via the two in-built stereo speakers.
Users can also take advantage of the included fingerprint sensor placed below the arrow keys. The sensor works with Windows Hello and provides a well-appreciated level of security. The laptop also has a white backlit keyboard which can be turned off if you so choose. The notebook supports 802.11ac Wi-Fi featuring 2×2 MU-MIMO technology (Dual-Band 2.4GHz and 5GHz) for faster internet. Its 2-cell Li-Ion 4670 mAh battery is slated to provide up to 8 hours of battery life.
