Police say they are investigating the shooting as a murder-attempted suicide.
CAMARILLO, Calif. — A woman was killed and a man injured during a shooting Saturday at a Southern California mall, authorities say.
Police say they are investigating the shooting as a murder-attempted suicide.
The armed male was first reported around 2:20 p.m. at the Paper Source store inside The Oaks mall in Thousand Oaks near Los Angeles.
The crime scene was contained to the store and authorities are not searching for an outstanding suspect according to Sgt. Eric Buschow, a spokesman for the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office.
Police confirmed that two people, a man and a woman, were injured in the shooting. Emergency medical personnel transported the male patient to a local hospital. The woman was pronounced dead by authorities.
The mall was reportedly put on lockdown, with authorities instructing people to shelter in place.
Agoura Hills resident Pia Navarro was inside at Nordstrom during the lockdown.
“They’ve locked everything down so everyone’s pretty calm,” Navarro said.
Those outside the lockdown area were being evacuated, according to reports on Twitter.
The evacuation ended at 3:45 p.m. and people were allowed back inside the mall, authorities said.
The exterior portion of the mall, where the shooting occurred, remained closed due to the investigation, according to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office.
The mall spans over a million square feet of retail space, so many visitors were initially unaware that a shooting had occurred.
Matt Lemieux was working on his computer inside the Coffee Bean, wearing headphones, when he suddenly saw “a whole group of people” running past. His 9-year-old son was at a birthday party in the movie theater, and he headed there.
“It was creepy,” he said.
