The Desire 12 and the Desire 12+, launched by HTC on Tuesday, are gorgeous mid-rangers. With some uninspiring hardware specs though. The Desire 12+, as the name suggests, is the heftier one of the two. It comes with dual rear cameras too, and Android Oreo, but everything else, well, leaves a lot to be desired. The Desire 12 doesn’t even have a fingerprint scanner, for crying out loud, which leaves you asking for more, further still.
The Desire 12 and the Desire 12+, when you look at them in totality, wouldn’t have really stood out if it were not for their gorgeous near bezel-less design. The Desire 12 and the Desire 12+, are in fact, the cheapest HTC phones to ship with a near bezel-less design and an unusual aspect ratio of 18:9. Here’s a rough ball park. While the Desire 12+ starts at 235 Euros (roughly Rs 18,862) the Desire 12 starts at 185 Euros (roughly Rs 14,848).
Both the phones sport HTC’s Liquid Surface design scheme, like the flagship U11 and U11 Plus, only toned down to fit their mid-range credentials. Only the Desire 12+ comes with a fingerprint scanner and it lies on the back. The Desire 12 does not have a fingerprint scanner. Both the phones support HTC’s Sense Companion assistant in addition to the Google Assistant but there’s no Edge Sense on-board.
The Desire 12+ comes with a 6-inch HD+ IPS display and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 processor clubbed with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage which is further expandable by up to 2TB via a micro-SD card slot. It runs Android Oreo-based Sense UI. On the camera front, the Desire 12+ ships with dual rear cameras — 13-megapixel+2-megapixel — with phase detection autofocus and LED flash. The secondary sensor aids in bokeh shots or portrait photography. On the front, the Desire 12+ comes with an 8-megapixel camera with LED flash. The Desire 12+ is further backed by a 2,965mAh battery that charges over micro-USB.
The Desire 12 meanwhile comes with a 5.5-inch HD+ IPS display and is powered by a MediaTek MT6739 processor clubbed with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage which is further expandable by up to 2TB via a micro-SD card slot. It runs an unspecified version of Android-based Sense UI. On the camera front, the Desire 12 ships with a 13-megapixel rear camera with phase detection autofocus and LED flash. On the front, the Desire 12 comes with a 5-megapixel camera. The Desire 12 is further backed by a 2,730mAh battery that charges over micro-USB.
