Several people were crushed to death when a newly installed pedestrian bridge at Florida International University collapsed Thursday afternoon and flattened cars on the roadway below, authorities said.
It was unclear how many people were trapped beneath the bridge, but there appeared to be at least five vehicles beneath the fallen walkway at the Miami school.
Several people were killed, the Florida Highway Patrol told CBS Miami .
“My school finished putting up a bridge a few days ago and it literally just fell,” a student using the name @Ialilulelo wrote on Twitter . “My roommate and I heard it from our rooms and ran to the balcony.”
Police put out an urgent call for doctors and nurses to rush to the scene to aid the injured.
Just days earlier, the school’s president hailed the new bridge — and said that “student safety” was a priority.
“FIU is about building bridges and student safety. This project accomplishes our mission beautifully,” President Mark B. Rosenberg wrote in the since-deleted tweet.
