Probes of alleged Russian interference in the 2016 election are no “witch hunt,” and Vladimir Putin is “taking advantage” of the President Trump, former Trump campaign aide Sam Nunberg said in an interview Saturday.
Putin “wanted Donald Trump to win,” Nunberg said in the interview, completed after he spent six hours Friday testifying before a grand jury in Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s probe .
Nunberg’s testified days after he made a media splash Monday by stating in a series of bizarre cable news interviews that he would ignore Mueller’s subpoena.
Nunberg told ABC News reporter Tara Palmeri that he was asked many questions in his testimony, from whether he ever heard Russian spoken in the office to why President Trump supported Putin’s strategy in Syria.
Nunberg also said that Mueller’s investigation is not without cause. “I don’t think it’s a witch hunt,” he said. “There’s a lot of there there, and that’s a sad truth.”
He added, “I don’t believe it leads to the president.”
Six weeks after he started working on Trump’s campaign, Nunberg was fired over a series of racist Facebook posts.
Nunberg said he had “never worked with anybody that was unethical” in the Trump team, and that he was “very worried” about Trump adviser and political strategist Roger Stone, whom he has described as his mentor.
