The first part will be released this spring, while the entire film will be available this summer.
ANN ARBOR, MI – An Ann Arbor actor and filmmaker has created a two-part documentary examining the Enbridge Line 5 oil pipeline and the risks it could pose to the Great Lakes.
“Line 5 Part One: The Threat” follows scientists, activists and Michigan residents as they explore the potential dangers of Enbridge Energy’s oil pipeline, according to the filmmaker.
The film was created and directed by Ann Arbor’s Barton Bund.
Bund, 42, is the former managing artistic director of the Blackbird Theatre, 325 Braun Court in Ann Arbor. He attended Greenhills School and graduated from Eastern Michigan University in 2001.
Bund, who started out as an actor, has previously had roles in “Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice,” “The Dunes, Age of Ice,” and will be in an episode of “Chicago Fire” that airs next week, he said.
Bund worked on the Line 5 oil documentary with his parents, Ian and Sally Bund, who have always been concerned with the environment, specifically the Great Lakes.
“We hope the film will be useful in spreading awareness of the grave dangers posed by line five,” Bund said. “My team and I began shooting in the fall of 2017 and have now gathered enough information to make a strong case that the line is failing.”
The Line 5 oil pipeline, which lies underneath the Straits of Mackinac, is in a sensitive area between Lake Huron and Lake Michigan, where powerful currents could carry leaked oil in different directions, Bund says.
Any potential damage could reach over 700 miles of coastline and poison water supplies of cities throughout the region.
“The risks outweigh the benefits,” Bund said. “This film is part of a statewide effort among citizens to protect those waters from this catastrophic potential spill.”
Part one of the documentary will be released online the night of Tuesday, April 10, with the rest of the film coming out this summer, Bund said.
