Does “Avengers: Infinity War” have a post-credits scene?
It felt like the day would never come, but Avengers: Infinity War finally arrives in theaters on Thursday, April 26. Perhaps the only thing worthy of speculation at this point heading into this weekend are the contents of any post-credits scenes. The Russo Brothers recently confirmed there is reason to stay after the credits, but they didn’t exactly confirm a straight-up post-credits scene in the traditional sense.
“When the credits are coming up, you start to see card after card of movie star after movie star and it just starts to go on and on and on and on,” The Russo Brothers told BackstageOL on video. “It’s like nobody’s ever seen, a list of actor names like that before at the end of a movie.”
Usually, post-credits scenes expand on the ending, or tease an upcoming Marvel flick. What the Russos describe sounds more like a produced roll of credits, perhaps honoring fallen Avengers or celebrating how far Marvel has come since Iron Man in 2008.
While the Russos teased something entirely new when the credits roll, that doesn’t mean a traditional post-credits scene won’t follow. So if there is one, what are Marvel’s options? The fervent rumor making the rounds right now is the appearance of Nick Fury or Agent Coulson. During the Infinity War press tour, Anthony Russo was coy when asked a question about Clark Gregg’s Phil Coulson appearing in the film.
“I’d like to talk more about bass fishing,” Russo said. The phrase seems to be he and Chris Pratt’s go-to response when asked about questions they cannot answer. “We thought about everybody in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and how they could play a role in the story,” Russo added.
The response garnered more attention due to the fact ABC has yet to renew Agents of SHIELD for a sixth season and Agent Coulson is set to appear in 2019’s Captain Marvel movie. If SHIELD gets cancelled, that means the end of present day Coulson. Captain Marvel takes place before the events of the very first Iron Man film, where Coulson was introduced. The Avengers still believe Coulson was murdered by Loki in the first Avengers film in 2012 and don’t know (yet) that he’s still alive. The possibility of Agent Coulson appearing in Infinity War is exciting because when a few of our beloved Avengers inevitably die, it may comfort the remaining Avengers to know one thought-dead Avenger still lives.
At this point, it seems fairly unlikely Agent Coulson will appear in the film itself, but that doesn’t mean he and Nick Fury won’t appear in a post-credits scene either teasing Avengers 4 (unofficial title) or Captain Marvel. Fury is set to appear in Avengers 4 and both will star in Captain Marvel. Taking into account the fact that Marvel will be absent from San Diego Comic Con’s Hall H presentations this year where huge announcements and trailers are usally revealed, it’s likely Infinity War will leave us with something big to ponder. Agent Coulson or Fury’s appearance could certainly leave an impact that would carry through until Captain Marvel arrives in March 2019.

Another option for the Avengers: Infinity War post-credits scene is Captain Marvel herself. With Avengers 4 coming after her solo debut, we know she may be a sort of saving grace for The Avengers in the Infinity War sequel. Maybe we’ll first see her appear in present day in the post-credits scene, teasing her future role to make fans curious about her origin story. And if Marvel wants to avoid teasing future installments, there’s always the chance they go for pure comedy. A scene with Star Lord or Spider-Man would make waiting through the credits worth it.
We can’t rule out the possibility that there won’t be a post-credits scene. If the Russos want to have us completely devastated with no hope for the future of our favorite movie superhero team, no post-credits would ensure we leave the theater crying. With the absence at Hall H during SDCC, maybe Marvel will use the opportunity to announce an entirely new film or do something unexpected? If they decide against nothing, they could go a different route. Thanos will presumably have to defeat the Nova Corps to acquire the infinity stone within the Orb. Maybe Marvel will use the space to tie up some loose ends cut out of the movie. You just never know…
The Avengers: Infinity War Los Angeles premiere takes place April 23 and someone is sure to leak some info regarding the after-credits scenes. We’ll update this article when we know more. Any ideas? Let us know in the comments.
