Kalamazoo Public Schools appointed Christopher Aguinaga to principal of Loy Norrix High School.
KALAMAZOO, MI — Loy Norrix has a new principal.
The Kalamazoo Public Schools Board of Education voted to appoint Christopher Aguinaga Thursday. He replaces Rodney Prewitt, who resigned last November after being placed on administrative leave following news stories about an active federal sexual harassment lawsuit against him.
According to an amended meeting agenda, the job was posted internally and externally.
Compensation details were not released to MLive/Kalamazoo Gazette Friday. The district does not negotiate contracts with individual administrators, instead using a union contract to determine salaries.
Aguinaga has worked in the district for 12 years, and spent four years at Loy Norrix. He was an assistant principal for one year before becoming dean of students.
The new principal also was a teacher at Maple Street Magnet School for The Arts for eight years; six years as a social studies teacher and two years as the leadership coach.
He was active on the school improvement team, serving as co-chair for three years, chaired the social studies department and was a member of the school’s Michigan’s Integrated Behavior and Learning Support Initiative team.
Aguinaga was a member of the 2010-11 Kalamazoo Public Schools Aspiring Administrators‘ Academy and a member of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development.
He also served as vice president of the Kalamazoo Education Association.
Aguinaga earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Secondary Education in 2005 and a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership in 2010 from Western Michigan University.
Interviews were conducted by teams consisting of the administrators, teachers, parents and students, including:
