The Korean video game rating board appears to have listed a re-release of the Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
Gearbox Software may have a Borderlands surprise in store for E3 after all. Today the Korean Game Rating Board, GRB, published a rating for a Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition for modern platforms, perhaps undercutting a forthcoming announcement from Gearbox and publisher 2K Games. The rating lists PC, PS4, and Xbox One, so Borderlands fans across all platforms should be covered.
Just to refresh everyone’s memory, the original Borderlands was released in late 2009 on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. Four DLC releases followed, starting with The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned and ending with Claptrap’s Robot Revolution. A Game of the Year Edition was then released in 2010 including the base game, all four DLCs, and early access to Duke Nukem Forever.
Eight years later, the original Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition remains available for purchase via retailers for PS3 and 360. The PC version seems to only be available digitally, however. A modern release, if the Korean rating wasn’t made in error, would add PS4 and Xbox One and bring back PC retail boxes to store shelves.
What will be interesting to see in the weeks to come is whether Gearbox putting together a rerelease of Borderlands is more than it seems. A remaster or the addition of new content certainly seem within the realm of possibility, though a co-op shooter like Borderlands would be fine as-is, too. Alternatively, Gearbox could be using a Borderlands rerelease to build-up hype for something even bigger.
Gearbox has already reportedly said that Borderlands 3 will not have a “presence” at E3 2018, but more trustworthy reports have been proven false at E3 before. Imagine a scenario where Gearbox shows off an announcement trailer for the next big Borderlands game at one of the major press conferences, followed by CEO Randy Pitchford walking out on-stage and saying that, while Borderlands 3 development continues, fans can buy a rerelease of the original Borderlands for modern platforms immediately.
Expect more information on a possible Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition re-release, or more, before too long. And keep in mind that the rating may have been mistakingly issued and there may be no new Borderlands news at all.
