Activision Blizzard held its quarterly investor call this week and while touting a list of achievements for Q2, the company left off Bungie’s Destiny 2.
Activision Blizzard held its Q2 2018 financial call today and with it came a lot of talk about the publisher’s future products, as well as some reflections on the past quarter. However, when it came to listing out all of its accomplishments for Q2, Activision Blizzard left one major franchise out: Destiny 2.
To be fair, Activision Blizzard did give a brief mention to Destiny 2, touting its upcoming September expansion, which includes a mode that has never been featured in a first person shooter before. But when it came time to give a rundown of Activision Blizzard’s successes in Q2, Destiny 2 was left off the list.
Titles like Candy Crush, Call of Duty, and even Spyro and Crash Bandicoot were included, with the former two releasing remastered versions on current platforms. And during any investor call it’s practically expected that Blizzard will get some attention, as the company’s 1-2-3 punch of World of Warcraft, Hearthstone, and Overwatch is a massive money maker.
But leaving out Destiny 2 says a lot about where the brand is now and Activision’s feelings towards it. Where Destiny once was name-dropped in the same breath as Call of Duty, now Activision is shying away from mentioning the title too much. What’s even more curious is the fact that Activision Blizzard didn’t spend a lot of time touting Destiny 2’s Warmind expansion, which is the publisher’s most imminent content release.
All that is to say the lack of Destiny 2 talk during the financial call is curious, and says a lot about the state of the brand right now. Bungie hopes to win back players with Warmind, but many have their sights set on the September expansion to see if the developer can revamp the FPS sequel to more closely mirror its predecessor.
Those that attended the recent Bungie Community Summit suggest that there are some exciting changes in the pipeline, but fans have no idea what those are just yet. Our first look at what the future looks like for Destiny 2 will come at E3 2018, when the September expansion is officially revealed.
Destiny 2 is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
