The news that First Lady Melania Trump returned to the White House Saturday morning from her hospital stay following kidney surgery came a bit too soon for New York Times chief White House correspondent Peter Baker.
On Saturday morning, Baker tweeted, “Where is the first lady? The White House won’t say but insists she’s feeling fine five days after a procedure that is usually done on an outpatient basis.”

The tweet included a Friday New York Times article entitled, “White House keeps Details Of Melania Trump’s Health Under Wraps” by Katie Rogers.
“At this point in Mrs. Trump’s recovery, specialists say it is hard to know why she would remain in the hospital for the better part of a week,” Rogers wrote. “It is possible that a patient could stay longer after an embolization procedure if there were underlying medical conditions, or if an infection, pain or discomfort developed afterward, Dr. Joseph A. Vassalotti, the chief medical officer at the National Kidney Foundation, said in an interview.”
Notwithstanding the media’s curiosity, the White House was about to release the most vital detail of all — that the first lady was coming home. Just nine minutes later, Baker acknowledged the news.

Earlier this month, the Times ran a story with the headline, “At a Key Moment, Trump’s Top Diplomat Is Again Thousands of Miles Away,” only to find out that Secretary of State Pompeo was negotiating the release of the hostages.
