President Trump on Monday attacked the media and touted his administration hours after NBC News reported chief of staff John Kelly has called the president an “idiot” and caused sagging morale in the White House.
“The White House is running very smoothly despite phony Witch Hunts etc. There is great Energy and unending Stamina, both necessary to get things done,” Trump tweeted.
“We are accomplishing the unthinkable and setting positive records while doing so! Fake News is going “bonkers!” he added.
In a separate tweet, Trump called the media “totally unhinged” and “truly bad people.”
Trump frequently lashes out at reports that are critical of his administration, deeming them “fake news.”
The NBC story cited eight current and former officials who spoke about Kelly’s interactions with other White House staffers. The officials said Kelly has criticized Trump’s lack of policy knowledge, and has rattled female staffers with some of his rhetoric.
Kelly denied the report, calling it “BS” in a statement issued by the White House.
“I spend more time with the president than anyone else and we have an incredibly candid and strong relationship,” Kelly said.
“I am committed to the president, his agenda, and our country,” he added. “This is another pathetic attempt to smear people close to President Trump and distract from the administration’s many successes.”
