CBS “Late Show” host Stephen Colbert defended President Donald Trump’s efforts to achieve nuclear disarmament with North Korea during an conversation with MSNBC’s Chris Matthews on Monday night.
“I can kind of understand North Korea because you butter up somebody to get them to the negotiating table,” Colbert stated. “And if he succeeds, God bless him. If he succeeds in reducing the nuclear threat in North Korea…”
Matthews proceeded to laugh at the late night host’s remarks, which sparked laughter from the crowd.
“No, but you have to. You have to think the best,” Colbert went on. “You have to hope your president succeeds in that condition.”
“This is not a date, this is not going to work. This is not just lunch. It’s not going to work,” Matthews reiterated.
By the end, Matthews agreed that if it “makes the world safer” then it was a good move by the president.
During the summit on Monday, President Trump and Kim had positive conversations. “Today, we had a historic meeting and decided to leave the past behind and we are about to sign the historic document,” Kim said. “The world will see a major change.” (RELATED: Kim Jong Un Promises ‘Major Change’ At Trump Signing Ceremony)
