Reddit user Vsbux, who is re-reading the Harry Potter novels after playing Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, discovers a possible reference to the game in the books.
Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery has earned some criticism for its plot holes and contradicting established Harry Potter canon. However, it’s possible that the developers have more Harry Potter knowledge than fans are giving them credit for, as one Reddit user has found a line in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets that could arguably be a clever reference to the events in the game.
Reddit user Vsbux is re-reading the Harry Potter novels, and in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, they found a line that could allude to the events of Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery. The line in question comes about when Ron recalls that his brother Bill Weasley once told him about a “secret chamber” at the school, and while that “chamber’ could very well be the Chamber of Secrets, it’s also possible Bill was referring to the Cursed Vaults.
After all, Hogwarts Mystery shows that a portion of Bill Weasley’s time at Hogwarts was spent searching for the Cursed Vaults with the player character, and each vault could be called a “secret chamber.” Of course, the books were written years before Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery was ever conceived, so if it is a reference, it’s a retroactive one.
This theory assumes that Hogwarts Mystery is canon, and there is some dispute about that. Despite being developed under the Portkey Games label, which is dedicated to creating original Harry Potter video game adventures, Hogwarts Mystery has a number of plot holes and inconsistencies with the novels. Jam City has made some changes to fix some of these plot holes, but even so, some fans may still refuse to accept the game as canon since it wasn’t written by J. K. Rowling herself.
If Hogwarts Mystery is canon, it reveals some interesting facts about Hogwarts before Harry Potter started attending school there. For example, we learn that the player character was responsible for naming Hagrid’s dog Fang, and that the school was once tormented by the aforementioned Cursed Vaults.
Whether or not Jam City took this line from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets into account when developing the plot of Hogwarts Mystery is hard to say, but it seems as though fans are responding positively to the theory.
Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery is out now for iOS and Android mobile devices.
