A woman crying “Allahu akbar” attacked at least two people with a box cutter at a supermarket in southern France on Sunday, according to French media reports.
The attack occurred in La Seyne-sur-Mer, a Mediterranean seaside town about 30 miles southeast of Marseilles. A customer was seriously injured and hospitalized with a chest wound, and a woman at the market’s cash register was less seriously hurt, Europe 1 radio reported, citing the Toulon prosecutor’s office.
The attacker, who was not known to authorities, has been arrested and detained, Toulon prosecutor Bernard Marchal said. Investigators believe the attack was an isolated incident committed by a person with “psychological troubles,” but they have not ruled out terrorism as a motive, Marchal added.
Toulon police were conducting a search of the attacker’s home on Sunday afternoon to determine “whether she has links to Daesh,” Marchal said, using the Arabic acronym for the Islamic State.
The possible terror attack comes just over a month after a Chechnya-born French citizen went on a stabbing rampage in central Paris, killing one person and injuring four others. The attacker, who also shouted “Allahu akbar” while stabbing bystanders, was on France’s so-called “S file” of people suspected of radicalized views who pose a terrorism risk. He was shot and killed by police who responded to the attack, which was claimed by the Islamic State hours later.
France has been on high alert in recent years due to a string of Islamist terror attacks, including two with an extraordinarily high number of casualties: the November 2015 attacks that killed 130 in Paris, and the 2016 Bastille Day truck attack in Nice that killed more than 80.
There have also been several less deadly attacks carried out by lone wolf jihadists, most of which were claimed by ISIS and carried out in the group’s name.
