Streets in East LA and Santa Ana were shut down as people celebrated the win.
Mexico’s soccer team won Saturday’s opening World Cup match against Germany, and Southern California cities including East Los Angeles and Santa Ana, which have large Mexican populations and communities, celebrated big time.
In East LA, people lined Whittier Boulevard waving Mexican flags and wearing green jerseys and sombreros. Drivers honked their horns as they passed by.
Some were even lighting fireworks just after the game ended locally at 10 a.m.

Lt. Edmundo Torres of the Sheriff’s East Los Angeles station said there were about 1,000 people gathered immediately after the game all along Whittier Boulevard near the intersection with Ford Boulevard.
“Absolutely no arrests whatsoever,” Torres said. He said deputies were still on Whittier Boulevard, closing off traffic to the area and helping keep the revelers safe.
Meanwhile in Orange County, crowds gathered on Bristol Street in Santa Ana to also light off some fireworks, wave flags and celebrate.
Santa Ana police also responded and announced via Twitter that Bristol between First Street and Edinger Avenue was closed off.
