Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Tuesday praised Brett Kavanaugh’s qualifications for the Supreme Court and said he is “precisely” the kind of judge who will not inject his personal views in deciding cases.
The Kentucky Republican praised Kavanaugh, who President Trump nominated Monday to replace retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy, as an “outstanding legal mind” who is “thorough and thoughtful.”
“Judge Kavanaugh understands in the United States of America, judges are not – not – unelected super-legislators whom we select for their personal views or policy preferences,” McConnell said during a speech on the Senate floor. “A judge’s duty is to interpret the plain meaning of our laws and our Constitution according to how they are written.”
The senator went on to say justices need to be unbiased, able to “treat all parties fairly” and “approach all cases with open ears and an open mind.”
“By all accounts, Judge Kavanaugh is precisely that kind of judge,” he said.
