Vice President Mike Pence revealed the real reason why President Trump nominated Judge Brett Kavanaugh to replace Anthony Kennedy as a Supreme Court justice in an interview Tuesday, and it has nothing to do with the Mueller probe.
Many Democrats, led by New York Sen. Chuck Schumer, made the argument that Trump nominated Kavanaugh in order to have a friend on the Supreme Court who would rule in favor of the president should any case of Russian collusion during the 2016 presidential campaign appear before SCOTUS.
“Did this decision have anything to do with the Mueller investigation?” asked Fox News host Bret Baier.
“I don’t believe it did in any way,” Pence said. “What the president focused on was a judicial philosophy. What he focused on was a body of work by Judge Kavanaugh, and we examined other candidates who were finalists for this position to see if we could, in that body of work, determine that this was a judge who would faithfully uphold and interpret the Constitution as written.”
“It really was the lone star in the course of all of this. Now, make no mistake about it, Judge Kavanaugh — he’s a conservative jurist. He is a principal conservative in the tradition of Justice Scalia. When you look at cases that he is ruled on, on limited government, on federalism, on the Second Amendment, on religious liberty, in one case after another you see a consistent judicial philosophy come forward,” Pence continued.
