The eclectic Aquaman cast, under the direction of James Wan (Furious 7), makes a splash in this first footage from San Diego Comic-Con 2018.
Can we get a “YE-AH!”? Jason Momoa was on hand at San Diego Comic-Con to debut the first trailer for the Aquaman spinoff, which quickly made its way online. The footage is… splashy.
The first trailer for Aquaman, DC Films’ spinoff set before the events of Justice League, finds a giant world under the sea. Momoa appears to be having a ball as he Arthur Curry, who finds himself in a kind of Shakespearean rivalry with his brother, Orm a.k.a. Ocean Master a.k.a. Watchmen actor Patrick Wilson. The rest of the cast includes Amber Heard ( Magic Mike XXL) as Mera; Willem Dafoe ( Spider-Man) as Vulko; Temuera Morrison ( Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones) as Tom Curry; Dolph Lundgren ( Universal Soldier) as King Nereus; Yahya Abdul-Mateen II ( The Get Down) as Black Manta; and Nicole Kidman ( The Hours) as Atlanna.
“ Justice League was only a weekend in Arthur Curry’s life,” Momoa told Entertainment Weekly in December. “This is a totally different beast. In Aquaman, you see when his parents met and what happened to him. Then the little boy being raised and finding his powers and going through that and never being accepted on either side. And then becoming this man who puts up all these walls. You just slowly see this man harden up and be completely reluctant wanting to be king and not knowing what to do with these powers he has. I think James Wan just killed it.”
“I want our film to be a little bit different, a bit more unique,” Wan told SDCC attendees. “My movie plays more like science fiction fantasy film than a traditional superhero movie.”
This is clear. The trailer opens on a stormy night sea, and a condensed origin story for Arthur Curry. Little do they know… he’s a badass who talks to fish. From there it’s lots of “war with mankind” talk, gorgeous shots of Atlantis, and inventive water-based action.
Anyone wondering if the movie can rival Momoa’s “MY MAN!” from Justice League, fret not: the trailer contains a final “YAHOOOOO!!”
Aquaman hits theaters on Dec. 21,2018.
