That’s one way to talk about a 23-time Grand Slam champion.
Camila Giorgi breezed through her Round of 16 match at Wimbledon on Monday, besting Ekaterina Makarova 6-3,6-4. So it was only natural that a reporter asked the Italian about her next opponent — Serena Williams.
But Giorgi’s bizarre response to the reporter’s question is now being ridiculed.
“I don’t follow tennis, women’s tennis… but I think it’s going to be a good match,” she said.
Williams, a seven-time Wimbledon singles champion, responded with a little more tact.
“I played her a couple times, she has a very powerful game,” Williams replied. “To be so small, you know, she brings so much power and energy on the court. She’s very aggressive. She does well on grass. I do follow women’s tennis. Of course I support women’s tennis. I support women’s sports. I follow so much of it. I think it’s super exciting.”
Williams has won all three of their meetings, with the last match coming at the 2016 Australian Open.
Giorgi, the world No. 52, has already reached a career milestone by advancing to the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam for the first time. The 26-year old reached the fourth round of the 2013 US Open.
They are scheduled to play Tuesday on Centre Court.
