Woman and five children dead in hotel fire in Southwest Michigan

The fire was reported at 1:45 a.m. Saturday, July 28.
BERRIEN COUNTY, MI — A 26-year-old woman and five children, all part of the same family, died in a hotel fire north of Niles that filled the building with smoke and flames.
The fire was reported about 1:45 a.m. at the Cosmo Extended Living Hotel, 2699 M-139 Highway.
Berrien County authorities said the children who died ranged in age from 2 through 10.
It was not immediately clear if others were injured in the fire.
Berrien County sheriff’s deputies said 27 rooms were occupied at the time of the fire.
American Red Cross workers are at the scene to help families with housing and immediate needs.
Deputies said that an estimated 90 percent of the rooms had smoke, fire or water damage.
The cause of the fire is under investigation and a state police fire marshal will be assisting Berrien County sheriff’s personnel with the investigation.
