The Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX chip can be purchased from global retailers and system integrators for $1,799 starting today. It works with AMD X399 platforms and other new motherboards.
AMD teased its second-generation Ryzen Threadripper processor with 32 cores and 64 threads back at Computex 2018 in June. The semiconductor company officially announced the chip’s name and specs last week, and as promised the 32-core Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX processor is available worldwide starting today for $1,799.
The new generation of Ryzen Threadripper is based on AMD’s 12nm Zen+ x86 processor architecture. AMD claims the 32-core model provides up to 53% faster multi-thread performance than Intel’s Core i9-7980XE chip and works with existing AMD X399 chipset motherboards. Additionally, AMD’s second-generation Ryzen Threadripper CPUs also include the 24,16, and 12-core variants called the 2970WX, 2950X, and 2920X, respectively. The new motherboards designed by ASRock, ASUS, Gigabyte, and MSI already support the new processors.
All variants feature the StoreMI Technology designed to let you load files, games, and applications from a high-capacity hard drive onto configured PCs. The new processors also come with the Ryzen Master Utility for fast core detection and the Precision Boost Overdrive for raising multi-threaded boost limits.
The Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX can be purchased from global retailers and system integrators. Meanwhile, AMD announced that the Ryzen Threadripper 2950X processor will release on August 31. In October this year, the Ryzen Threadripper 2970WX and 2920X models are also slated for rollout.
