Bridge Collapse in Genoa, Italy: What We Know So Far

A motorway suspension bridge collapsed on Tuesday in the northern Italian city of Genoa. The tragic incident has already claimed over 10 lives with cars and trucks buried under the rubble. Local authorities have dispatched emergency service personnel to rescue the victims.
According to Italian police, Bridge Morandi on the A10 highway near Genoa suddenly collapsed at around 11:50 local time (09:50 GMT). Italian police later released a shocking video from the scene.
Shortly after the incident, Francesco Bermano, Genoa’s ambulance service director, said the collapse had claimed the lives of dozens of people. Specifying the data on the issue, Italian Deputy Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Edoardo Rixi later reported that at least 7 people had died in the collapse, while up to 20 cars had been severely damaged or destroyed.

A few hours after the accident, police reported that at least 11 people had died, while seven had been injured. Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, while addressing the issue, reported that up to 200 firefighters and other emergency service workers are now conducting rescue operations at the site.
The bridge collapse is the second major accident in the country this month, following a fuel truck explosion near the Bologna airport last week.
