Wilburt Dion Thomas was expected to be arraigned Saturday.
DETROIT – A 47-year-old Detroit man has been charged nearly a month after his 7-year-old daughter was killed in a crash on I-94.
Wilburt Dion Thomas was charged with second-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter, operating under the influence, possession of marijuana and alcohol-open container, according to a WDIV-TV report.
Thomas was arrested Friday, Aug. 10, and was placed in custody of the Romulus Police Department, per WDIV. He was arraigned Saturday morning, Aug. 11.
Police said last month 7-year-old DeSandra Thomas was killed around 3:30 a.m. July 15 while crossing I-94 and Inkster Road near Detroit Metro Airport after her father crashed his vehicle while driving drunk.
Police also said DeSandra sent text messages to police asking for help for herself and her father.
Authorities said the vehicle Thomas was driving was allegedly stolen and he was under the influence of alcohol and marijuana, according to WDIV. The vehicle hit a disabled car on the shoulder of the road and struck a fence.
DeSandra then left the vehicle and attempted to cross the freeway, where police said she was hit.
A GoFundMe page for DeSandra has raised more than $15,000.
