Democratic congressional candidate Rashida Tlaib is laying down the path to become the first Muslim woman in Congress, thanks to a primary victory in Michigan on Tuesday.
Tlaib, formerly a Michigan state representative, won the Democratic nomination for Michigan’s 13th Congressional District. According to The Hill, no candidates ran for a third-party or Republican nomination in the primary, making her seat on Capitol Hill just a simple November vote away.
In 2008, she became the first Muslim women on the Michigan legislature and served three terms as state representative. If she wins the November election, she will also be the first person who is Palestinian-American in Congress.
Thank you so much for making this unbelievable moment possible. I am at a loss for words. I cannot wait to serve you in Congress.

Tlaib, who won against five other Democratic candidates on Tuesday, is pushing a progressive platform, putting her in the ranks with other young progressive Democrats gaining national attention, such as New York congressional candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

She pulled an amazing win last night, and will likely be the first Muslim woman and Palestinian-American to ever serve in Congress.
She won campaigning hard on issues like Medicare for All and tuition-free college, all without taking Corp lobbyist money. https://t.co/K5hd8rI5GY
