Former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen enters into plea deal with federal prosecutors

Michael Cohen — Trump’s former longtime attorney, “fix-it man,” and associate — is expected to plead guilty on Tuesday, August 21, as part of a deal with federal prosecutors for the US attorney’s office for the Southern District of New York.
Cohen faces possible charges of bank fraud, tax fraud, campaign finance violations, and other crimes for which he could spend three to five years in jail, according to Fox News. He has appeared to be in deep legal trouble since April 9, when the FBI raided his residence, office, and a hotel where he was staying and seized several of his electronic devices.
Though Cohen’s behavior has been reviewed in special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election, the deal is likely separate from that investigation, and it’s not yet clear what this could mean for President Trump. News of Cohen’s deal also coincides with the jury deliberations for the trial of former Trump campaign chair Paul Manafort.
