Mark Wahlberg defended the new popular films Oscars category and said that “maybe if they’d had the category before” he might have won a few of them.
“Maybe if they’d had the category before, we’d have won a couple of them,” the 47-year-old actor shared with Variety Friday at the premiere of his film “Mile 22.” “We’ve had some really commercially successful films that we think certainly warranted that kind of notoriety.” (RELATED: The Body Count In Mark Wahlberg’s New Movie Looks Absurdly High [VIDEO])

“We make films that we want people to enjoy and if we get those kind of accolades, fantastic,” he added. “If not, we make the movies for audiences to enjoy. There are a lot of great films out there that happen to be very popular and haven’t been recognized that probably deserve the recognition.”
Wahlberg was nominated in 2007 for a supporting actor Oscar for his part in “The Departed” and then once again in 2011 as a producer for “The Fighter.”
Ronda Rousey, also appearing in “Mile 22,” agreed with her co-star and said that the popular Oscars category sounded like a good idea to her.
“I might have a shot,” the 31-year-old actress said. “Finally, I’m in the running for an Academy Award. I’m gunning for the outstanding achievement in popular film [award]. You heard it now. Vote for me.”
