Nvidia Ray Tracing isn’t suited for competitve games like multiplayer shooters as it impact performance heavily. 30FPS at 4K in Battlefield V.
Nvidia Ray Tracing performance benchmarks are starting to pop-up and they paint a very interesting picture. Battlefield V Ray Tracing gameplay was shared a couple of days ago. The game runs well on 1080p with a solid 60FPS.
But the frame rates drop significantly when you go to higher resolutions. at 4K, the card could only manage 30FPS which means at higher resolutions, shooters with ray tracing enabled aren’t playable at all. On PC, you can not compete with someone playing on 80 to 100 FPS while you are using ray-tracing and running the game at 30 to 60 FPS, depending on your resolution.
So what is the best scenario for using Nvidia Ray Tracing? Well, it seems since this only boosts visual fidelity and brings out the best lightning in every scene at the cost of frame rates, it is best for single player, non-competitive games.
Games like Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Darksiders 3, and others are most suited. However, PvE focused games such as Destiny 2, The Division 2, Cyberpunk 2077, World of Warcraft, where framerates aren’t your first concern, is also suited for Nvidia Ray Tracing.
Judging from Battlefield V’s benchmarks, it is best to keep this feature disabled when playing Black Ops 4, Overwatch, Call of Duty World War 2, Battlefield 1, PUBG, Fortnite, and others.
But all hope isn’t lost for using Nvidia Ray-Tracing in competitive games. Whatever we are seeing right now are early benchmark results for Battlefield V and other games. Hardware updates and developer side optimization would help improve matters.
Unfortunately, we won’t be able to try Ray-Tracing ourselves in the upcoming Battlefield V Open beta .
