DIAMOND BAR – A social media threat of a shooter at a high school football game on Friday night caused panic as players, school officials and crowds rushed for safety, but authorities confirmed the threat was not credible.
Sheriff’s deputies with the Walnut/Diamond Bar Sheriff’s Station were dispatched to Diamond Bar High School about 9:30 p.m. on Aug. 17 after receiving a call about the threat on social media, Sgt. Tim Jimenez said. Deputies arrived and found no evidence of a credible threat at the game between Walnut High School and Diamond Bar.
Brandon Dade, Walnut High School principal, posted on social media that a rumor circulated in the crowd through social media and caused the panic. A video taken at the game showed football players sprinting off the field and panicked crowd members rushing for the exit.
Teams from other Sheriff’s stations were put on standby, but ultimately were not needed, Jimenez said.
He said he did not know which social media platform the threat appeared on, or what it said. Nor did he know if the person who made the threat attended or worked at the school.
The panic that swept through the stadium was captured on a video. The commotion doesn’t begin until about a minute into the video, below.
