South Korean tech giant Samsung has just launched its flagship phablet smartphone — Galaxy Note 10 — for 2018 and now the company’s mobile chief has hinted about the company’s future plans for its smartphones.
Speaking at a press conference, Samsung’s mobile chief DJ Koh said that the company aims to launch the first smartphone to come with 5G support but that won’t be Galaxy S10. The company, according to Koh, will launch another handset before that.
According to a report by ZDNet he said that the company was “focusing on developing innovations that will be genuinely accepted and liked by consumers” and Samsung “didn’t want to lose the world’s-first title.”
Following his comment, speculations about Samsung’s foldable smartphone — being called Galaxy X as of now — have spiralled.
Denying rumours about the merger of the Galaxy S series smartphones and Galaxy Note series phablets he said, “For the immediate future, there won’t be a change in launching the S series in the first half and Note series in the second half of the year.” But his another comment, he said that the Galaxy X smartphone is a long-term bet from the company. “We wouldn’t have started (the new smartphone series) if it was a going to be a one-time thing.”
Talking about 5G, a report from ET News quotes him saying, “We have concluded a deal with three mobile telcos and 5G smart phones at a meeting in New York on October 10 (local time) We will make sure that our goal of success is realized.”
“I do not want to lose the world’s first folder bubble,” Ko said. “I will be able to show it officially at a later date.”
Recently, it was revealed that the chaebol is getting into mass production of the foldable OLED display for the allegedly called the Galaxy X smartphone. Previous reports have suggested that the handset is likely to come with a 7-inch display and may not necessarily fold into half. Even though previously we have seen the display as folding into half, there are chances that it may only fold two-thirds so that the top part is still visible for essential information like time, notifications, battery percentage and other things. It is also likely that the aspect ratio of the display is close to a rectangle than a square.
