It appears that WPS Office Suite has made its way to the Microsoft Store, providing a free alternative to Microsoft’s own Office. The software seemed quite functional in our limited testing.
Last month, it appeared that LibreOffice had arrived in the Microsoft Store as a free alternative to Microsoft’s own Office suite. However, that turned out to be an unofficial release from a third-party developer and was promptly removed from the platform.
People who are still searching for a viable and free software to meet their productivity needs will be pleased to know that WPS’ Office Suite has made its way to the Microsoft Store, and from early looks, it does appear to be an official release.
The store listing has been titled “WPS Office for Free”, and the publisher name is Kingsoft Office Software, with all website and contact links pointing to the company’s official website. Many will remember that the listing for the unofficial LibreOffice in the Microsoft Store contained numerous red flags, including a third-party publisher name, and unofficial icon, and a price tag (although it could be downloaded for free). On the other hand, the WPS Office listing does not contain any of these issues, and by all means does appear to be an official release. Furthermore, it does appear to be quite functional in our own limited testing.
That said, it is important to note WPS’ own website does not mention any Microsoft Store version of the software so even if the chances of it are slim, it’s still possible that this is a third-party knock-off. Regardless, the store description for WPS Office reads as follows:
We have reached out to Kingsoft to confirm the authenticity of this release and will update this news story when they respond. In the meantime, you can check out the Microsoft Store listing here, but only download it at your own risk.
