After Daniel Carlson’s kicking woes cost the Vikings a win in Green Bay – the 2018 fifth-round pick missed three field goals, including two in overtime – Minnesota immediately places him on waivers and signed former Cowboy Dan Bailey.
Head coach Mike Zimmer was asked whether parting ways with Carlson after his nightmare day was a difficult decision to make during his Monday presser. If you’re looking for remorse, you won’t find it here…
Reporer: What went into the decision today to let Daniel Carlson go?
Zimmer: Did you see the game?
Reporter: Was it an easy decision?
Zimmer: Yeah, it was pretty easy.
Alright then.
This obviously isn’t the first time the Vikings have been done in by an inaccurate kicker. Blair Walsh cost Minnesota a playoff win in 2016 with his miss on a 27-yarder against the Seahawks. And Gary Anderson dashed the Super Bowl hopes of perhaps the best team in franchise history when he failed to ice the 1998 NFC title game against the Falcons after going perfect during the regular season. Zimmer was not going to wait around for another kicker-induced playoff heartbreak.
