Apple’s newest iPhone models come with a number of improvements over the last year’s lineup. Some of the major improvements include the mighty new A12 Bionic chipset, improved cameras, faster Face ID, a 120Hz touch frame rate, and more. In addition to these, Apple has also introduced one key feature that some of its fans have been looking forward to since years – Dual SIM support. All the three new iPhones come with a nano-SIM card slot and a secondary eSIM.
As its name suggests, an eSIM is an electronic SIM card. This means you can activate a cellular plan on your device without having to use a physical nano-SIM card. The actual eSIM is much smaller than even a nano-SIM card and is soldered directly to the motherboard. While the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR are the first iPhones to come with an eSIM, Apple has been using eSIM technology on its Apple Watch since last year. While the global variants of the latest iPhones will come with an eSIM and a nano-SIM card slot, they will ship with two physical nano-SIM slots in China.
Apple iPhone XS, XS Max Launched With Up to 6.5-inch OLED Display, 512GB Storage, Dual-SIM; Price Starts at $999
In order to use the Dual-SIM feature on the new iPhone models, you must have the iOS 12 update installed. Once you update to iOS 12, you will need to have a QR code or a carrier app from a supported carrier. In India, Apple has partnered with Airtel and Reliance Jio to support eSIM on the new iPhones this year. Apple expects to partner with more telcos next year. To activate your cellular plan with a QR code, you will need to head over to Settings > Cellular Plan and tap on Add Cellular Plan. Next, use your iPhone to scan the QR code provided to you by your carrier.
Once you have both the nano-SIM and eSIM set up, you will be able to use both phone numbers to make and receive voice calls, send and receive text messages, as well as access cellular data. However, if you make or receive a call on one number, incoming calls on the other number will go to voicemail. This is due to the fact that the latest iPhones come with Dual SIM Dual Standby and not Dual SIM Dual Active technology. After your second plan is activated, you can label your plans as primary, secondary, personal, business, travel, or add a custom label. You will also need to choose a number to be your default. You can either have the primary or secondary number as your default line or you can choose to use the secondary line for cellular data only. Apple also gives you the option of specifying which number should be used to call specific contacts.
