Samsung will soon be expanding its budget-friendly Galaxy J series lineup in India with the introduction of two new models – Galaxy J4 Plus and Galaxy J6 Plus. The Galaxy J6 Plus will be taking on smartphones like the popular Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro, which happens to be one of the best-selling smartphones in India currently. Ahead of its formal launch in the country, we will be comparing the Galaxy J6 Plus against its toughest rival – Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro.
Samsung Galaxy J6 Plus boasts a new fluid body design that features a glass finish to make the smartphone look more premium compared to previous J series smartphones from Samsung. However, when it comes to build, the Galaxy J6 Plus still uses a polycarbonate rear panel. Dominating the front is an Infinity Display featuring 720 x 1480 Full HD+ resolution and an 18.5:9 aspect ratio.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro, on the other hand, sports a premium metal unibody design and comes with a 5.99-inch Full Screen IPS LCD display panel featuring 1080 x 2160 Full HD+ resolution and an 18:9 aspect ratio. Thanks to its more premium build and higher display resolution, the Redmi Note 5 Pro is a clear winner in the design and display departments.
The Samsung Galaxy J6 Plus is powered by a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 chipset clocked at 1.4 GHz with an Adreno 308 GPU, which is a huge disappointment. It will be sold in India in a single memory configuration with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. For further expansion up to 512GB, the Galaxy J6 Plus features a microSD card slot.
Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro runs on a significantly more powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 octa-core processor clocked at 1.8 GHz with an Adreno 509 GPU. It comes in two memory configurations in India – 4GB RAM + 64GB storage and 6GB RAM + 64GB storage. The smartphone features Hybrid Dual-SIM slots, which means users can choose to add a microSD card to expand the storage further.
Needless to say, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro offers significantly better hardware specifications compared to the Galaxy J6 Plus.
Samsung Galaxy J6 Plus is equipped with a dual-camera setup at the rear, with the two sensors stacked vertically. The LED flash module is placed next to the dual-camera setup. While the primary 13MP sensor has been coupled with an f/1.9 aperture, the secondary 5MP sensor has been paired with an f/2.2 aperture. The dual-camera setup comes with Samsung’s Live Focus feature for bokeh effect. As for selfies, the Galaxy J6 Plus has an 8MP front-facing camera coupled with an f/1.9 aperture and an LED flash.
Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro has a 12MP + 5MP dual-camera setup at the rear with the primary 12MP sensor boasting a 1.25um pixel size, phase-detection autofocus, and an f/2.2 aperture. The secondary 5MP sensor is coupled with an f/2.0 aperture. For selfies, the Xiaomi smartphone is equipped with a 20MP snapper with an LED flash and an f/2.2 aperture. Both the rear and front cameras on the Redmi Note 5 Pro can capture Portrait shots. When it comes to video recording, both the smartphones are capable of 1080p Full HD video capture.
Although the Galaxy J6 Plus does feature a dual-camera setup, the Redmi Note 5 Pro is clearly superior in terms of optics.
The Samsung Galaxy J6 Plus is fueled by a 3300mAh capacity non-removable battery. Sadly, just like the Galaxy J6, the Galaxy J6 Plus does not come with fast charging support. In terms of software, the Galaxy J6 Plus will be shipping with Android 8.1 Oreo-based Samsung Experience 9.5 out of the box.
Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro is among the best budget Android smartphones out there when it comes to battery life, thanks to a large 4000mAh capacity non-removable battery under the hood. The smartphone also supports Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 2.0 standard for fast charging. As for software, the Redmi Note 5 Pro is currently receiving the MIUI 10 update based on Android 8.1 Oreo.

Thanks to a larger battery and fast charging support, the Redmi Note 5 Pro scores an easy win over the Samsung Galaxy J6 Plus in the battery life and OS departments.
The Samsung Galaxy J6 Plus, as we mentioned above, will only be available in a single variant in India. It has been priced at Rs.15,990. Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro is offered in two variants in India – 4GB RAM + 64GB storage and 6GB RAM + 64GB storage. While the 4GB RAM variant of the smartphone costs Rs.14,999, the 6GB RAM variant is priced at Rs.16,999.
Samsung’s budget smartphones have never really been truly impressive and the company’s latest offering is sadly no different. The Galaxy J6 Plus simply does not have much to offer, despite its relatively high price tag. Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 5 Pro, on the other hand, still remains one of the best budget Android smartphones around. That makes it the clear winner of our comparison today.
