Martinez is starting at first base for the first time since June 1,2016.
DETROIT — Victor Martinez tried to fight back the tears, but eventually was so overcome by emotion that he had to pause before he could muster a few words of thanks.
Surrounded by teammates, Martinez was saluted by the Detroit Tigers on Saturday night before playing in the final game of his 16-year career .
“From the bottom of my heart,” Martinez said, “thank you for being behind us all these years, supporting my teammates, supporting myself. Thank you very much.”
The emotions continued into the game.
Martinez started at first base for the first time since June 1,2016. He came to the plate in the bottom of the first inning. After a six-pitch at-bat, Martinez slapped a ground ball into the heart of the shift on the right side of the infield, beating out the throw to first.
It was the 2,153rd and final hit of his career.
He was lifted for a pinch-runner and received another standing ovation. Even the Royals joined the cheers. Fellow Venezuelans Salvador Perez and Alcides Escobar left the Royals dugout to give Martinez a hug as he walked off the field.
In the pre-game ceremony, Tigers catcher James McCann presented Martinez with a series of gifts from his teammates, including a pair of cowboy boots and a Tigers-themed riding saddle. Martinez has a cattle ranch in Florida where he plans to spend much of his time in retirement.
Tigers general manager Al Avila presented Martinez with a framed jersey and a Tigers-themed recliner. Martinez jumped into the seat with a smile.
The Tigers played a montage of highlights from Martinez’s career on the video board, including his 200th home run, 2,000th hit and even a recent bunt base hit.
