The Motorola One Power was unveiled today in India as competition for other value handsets such as the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro. India is a market tailor-made for Xiaomi. It is the second largest smartphone market in the world, but hampered by a low per capita income, older high-end phones are big sellers in the country. And so are new devices hawked by Xiaomi, which has become the top smartphone brand in India. Xiaomi is known for selling high-spec’d phones with a low profit margin because the company makes its bread from selling content, not hardware. Still, the Chinese manufacturer does depend on the ability of Indian consumers to perceive value when it comes to its phones.
Now, Motorola is looking to compete with Xiaomi in India with a handset that it believes also offers value for the money. That would be the Motorola One Power, which was unveiled today in India. Pricing is only half of the story when it comes to value; the specs are the other half. And with a 5000mAh battery, the One Power offers more battery life than the popular Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro, which features a 4000mAh battery.
The Motorola One Power is equipped with a notched 6.2-inch “Max Vision” LCD screen with a resolution of 1080 x 2246 (FHD+). This works out to an aspect ratio of 19:9. The Snapdragon 636 Mobile Platform is under the hood, and inside the phone you will find 4GB of RAM and 64GB of expandable storage. On back is a dual camera setup with a 16MP primary camera (f/1.8 aperture) and a 5MP second camera (f/2.2 aperture). In front is a 12MP camera for selfies and video chats, and the phone includes a 3.5mm headphone jack. The One Power does have a Widevine L1 DRM license, allowing it to stream HD video, and Android 8.1 Oreo is pre-installed.
A Flipkart exclusive in India, the Motorola One Power is priced at 15,999 Rupees ($220 USD), allowing it to qualify as a value phone. Registrations start today, and the handset will go on sale starting on October 5th. Don’t expect to see this model made available in the U. S., where Motorola is in a bit of disarray at the moment. The Moto G6 might be able to handle itself on the budget side of the equation, but the Moto Z3 and Moto Z3 Play are mid-range models and leave the company without a new high-end phone to sell in the U. S.
