China knocks Pompeo comments about investments as ‘malicious’

Chinese state-owned media outlets criticized Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Monday for warning Latin American countries of potential pitfalls of doing business with China.
Reuters reported that China Daily and Global Times, both run by the Chinese government, published editorials on Monday blasting the secretary’s comments.
China Daily dismissed Pompeo’s remarks as “ignorant and malicious,” and said it was false to suggest that investments in China would lead to debt.
Global Times wrote that Pompeo was “disrespectful” and attempting to “drive a wedge” between China and Latin America.
Pompeo spent the latter half of last week meeting with officials in Latin American countries, where he urged them to exercise caution in economic deals with China.
