Looks like PureView Nokia phones are back
HMD Global could be very close to announcing its 2018 flagship smartphone. We have heard plenty of rumours and we have seen tons of leaked renders and hands-on images to make us believe that the much-awaited Nokia 9 is real and coming soon. If there was any doubt about the naming, a new piece of information from Roland Quandt of WinFuture.de puts that to rest as well. According to his tweet, HMD will be calling its upcoming flagship Nokia 9 PureView.
Rumours were half right that the flagship will be called Nokia 9. But it seems HMD will be attaching PureView with the name as well. This isn’t surprising considering HMD recently acquired the rights to the PureView brand from Microsoft. To recall, PureView was purchased by Microsoft a few years ago when it purchased Nokia’s Devices and Services business. The first PureView-branded Nokia phone, the Nokia 808, was launched back in 2012 and made headlines for its whopping 41MP camera sensor.
Ever since HMD acquired PureView, we have been expecting the name to be associated with the Nokia 9. After all, rumours and leaked images all suggest the Nokia 9 will come with a penta-lens camera setup on the back, something that now sounds more believable than ever with the PureView branding. Leaked images show us a hexagonal five-camera setup on the back of the Nokia 9 PureView. It is tipped that the primary sensor will be fixed while the secondary sensor will be interchangeable via software rather than a hardware mechanism as previously thought.
As of now, there is no information on what sensors will make up the penta-lens camera on the Nokia 9 PureView. As this is touted as HMD’s 2018 flagship, we expect the phone to be powered by a Snapdragon 845 chipset with up to 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage.
Quandt in his tweet didn’t specify an exact date for the launch of the Nokia 9 PureView, but said that it will happen soon. HMD is holding an event in London on October 4 where we could hear something on the Nokia 9 PureView. The event, however, will likely be about the Nokia 7.1 Plus. With PureView under HMD’s umbrella, expect to see some crazy, innovative cameras on future Nokia phones.
