OnePlus says that it will be one of the first companies with a 5G smartphone

Today, OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei announced that the company will be one of the first to release a 5G smartphone. The device will include a Snapdragon X50 modem, and will arrive next year.
Today, OnePlus announced that it’s going to be one of the first companies to deliver a 5G smartphone. The news comes out of Qualcomm’s 4G/5G Summit in Hong Kong, where co-founder Carl Pei took the stage to discuss the topic, saying, “As OnePlus is at the forefront of technology and innovation, we hope to continue breaking barriers and be the first to release a phone which supports 5G.”
This adds OnePlus to a growing list of companies that are promising to deliver 5G devices next year. Lenovo’s Moto Z3 is going to support a 5G Moto Mod for Verizon, and Sprint has said that its first 5G device will come from LG next year. Huawei is heavily invested in the technology, and Xiaomi is putting 5G in the Mi Mix 3.
Indeed, pretty much every smartphone OEM is going to want to be invested in 5G, given the game-changing nature of 5Gbps download speeds. This is achieved with millimeter waves, which pretty much require a direct line of sight. Sub-6GHz waves will be used as well, and that should be a bit more flexible.
Like most of 5G devices, the OnePlus 5G phone will come equipped with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X50 modem.
