Brandy and Joseph Allen’s two teen children weren’t home with them Saturday night: The couple had gone fishing to celebrate a wedding anniversary, and the 14- and 18-year-olds stayed elsewhere. It may have saved their lives. The Missouri couple was found shot dead Sunday, in what police believe was a robbery gone wrong. Sheriff Scott Rice tells KY3 that police believe the incident occurred around 4am Sunday. Ozarks First reports it’s thought the Allens heard a noise outside, went to check on it, and found two would-be robbers attempting to steal their cars. Per a news release cited by the Springfield News-Leader, police say the couple got into a “gun battle” with the suspects.
The Allens’ bodies were found outside their Tunas home by Brandy Allen’s father, who was checking on his cattle in the area. Rice says the suspects tried to steal the couple’s restored El Camino but “got high centered in the driveway and it was left.” A pick-up truck was taken and was found Monday morning about 15 miles away stuck in mud. Son Tanner Allen shared his grief and anger with Ozarks First: “I want them dead to be honest…. They’ve left a 14-year-old and me with no parents for the rest of our lives, I hope that gets to them.” Lake News Online reports the search for the suspects has moved into neighboring Camden County. A GoFundMe campaign set up to cover funeral expenses and support the children has raised $17,000 as of this writing. (Cops are trying to find this alleged murderer using a podcast .)
