Everyone loves a good trailer, but keeping up with what’s new isn’t easy. We round up the best of the best each week so you can get caught up. On tap this week: The first trailers for Liam Neeson thriller Cold Pursuit and horror movie Escape Room, as well as the final trailer for Bohemian Rhapsody.
Crafting the perfect movie trailer is hard work. There must be enough intrigue to get the audience excited without revealing too much about the film’s plot points and key moments (even then, things don’t always work out perfectly). Because of the sheer volume of new movie trailers being released in a given week, we’ve taken the liberty of rounding them up and separating the good from the bad for you. Check out the latest must-see trailers below, whether you’re looking for action, horror, comedy, or something else.
It probably goes without saying, but we’ll say it anyway: Spoiler alert! Tread carefully, friends.
Note: All release dates are for the United States.
Actor-turned-filmmaker Alex Winter has already produced a pair of fascinating, tech-focused documentaries with Downloaded and Deep Web, and now he turns his attention to the evolution of blockchain technology in his latest film. Narrated by Rosario Dawson, Trust Machine explores the decentralized economy of cryptocurrencies and the technology, culture, benefits, and dangers surrounding them. Winter has shown a real knack for deconstructing complicated topics in the tech world and exploring the ways they’re changing the world — for better or worse, in some cases. The first trailer for the film suggests that he’ll continue that trend and show the humanity behind the technology.

With less than a week until its Queen biopic hits theaters, 20th Century Fox released the final trailer for Bohemian Rhapsody, which features quite a bit of new footage from the film. Rami Malik appears to give a phenomenal performance as Queen frontman and legendary musician Freddie Mercury, and early reviews for the film are just starting to circulate. Whether the film can do justice to the legacy of one of the greatest bands of all time and one of the most talented musicians of the modern era remains to be seen, but the trailers certainly make a good case.

Any opportunity to see Liam Neeson kicking butts — whether it’s kidnappers, terrorists, or even wolves — is welcome, but this film looks like something special. A remake of a Norwegian thriller directed by the original movie’s filmmaker, Cold Pursuit casts Neeson as a snowplow driver who embarks on a mission to avenge the death of his son and ends up taking on a vicious drug lord’s gang in the process. The arctic setting and the tone of the trailer makes it feel like a mix of Fargo and Taken, with colorful characters and quirky moments that differentiate it from the usual films built around Neeson beating up an endless parade of bad guys.

Remember when A Quiet Place came out of nowhere to become one of the year’s best horror films? This post-apocalyptic thriller feels similar, but focuses on a different sense — instead of a world where creatures hunt by sound, Bird Box follows a mother and her two children fighting to survive in a world where sight will get you killed. Sandra Bullock plays a mother who attempts to get her children to one of the last remaining sanctuaries from the mysterious entities that drive you to suicide if you see them. They have to undertake the journey while blindfolded, which leads to some tense moments, as seen in the trailer. Sarah Paulson and John Malkovich fill out an impressive cast.

Every trend gets its own mainstream horror movie eventually, so it was only a matter of time before we got Escape Room — a scary movie about, well… escape rooms. The trailer looks pretty decent, in that it has some interesting visual elements that make the movie seem thrilling. It also has some recognizable, but lesser-known actors ( Daredevil and True Blood actress Deborah Ann Woll is probably the highest-profile cast member). Insidious: The Last Key director Adam Robitel helms the film, which seems to borrow from the Saw movies here and there, but also has a mysterious Cabin in the Woods vibe, too.
