President Trump on Wednesday tweeted that the U. S. is standing with Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh “all the way” after three sexual misconduct allegations roiled his nomination.
Recent polls have indicated that nationwide opposition to Kavanaugh increased in the days following his hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee last Thursday.
Trump at a campaign-style rally on Tuesday night mocked Christine Blasey Ford, the first woman to accuse Kavanaugh of sexual assault.
Ford testified before the Judiciary Committee last Thursday about her allegation that Kavanaugh drunkenly pinned her down and groped her, at one point putting his hand over her mouth to keep her from screaming, during a high school party in the 1982.
Kavanaugh has denied her accusation, as well as those from two other women alleging he engaged in sexual misconduct in the 1980s.
The president made fun of Ford’s testimony at the hearing, implying she could not recall the specifics of the alleged assault. The crowd laughed and cheered as he imitated Ford.
“‘How did you get home?'” Trump said. “‘I don’t remember.’ ‘How’d you get there?’ ‘I don’t remember.’ ‘Where is the place?’ I don’t remember.’ ‘How many years ago was it?’ ‘I don’t know.'”
Lawmakers throughout the day on Wednesday denounced Trump’s remarks about Ford, with key swing votes GOP Sens. Susan Collins (Maine), Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) and Jeff Flake (Ariz.) speaking out against the president’s conduct.
Trump has consistently stood behind his high court pick, calling the accusations against him false.
The president has denied allegations of unwanted groping and kissing from more than a dozen women.
“I’ve had a lot of false charges made against me,” Trump said during a press conference in New York. “Does it affect me in terms of my thinking, with respect to Judge Kavanaugh? Absolutely. Because I’ve had it many times.”
Senate Republicans filed cloture on Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination on Wednesday.
