The first fatality of the California wildfires has been identified as an ailing woman who was found dead in her bed in her burned-out northern California home.
Ellen Walker, 70, was alone at home in Concow near Paradise when the deadly Camp Fire struck on Thursday, said family friend Nancy Breeding.
Walker’s husband was at work and called a neighbor to check on his wife and tell her to evacuate, Breeding said.
It’s unclear if Walker ever got the message. She was on medication and may not have been alert, Breeding said.
The family assumed she’d made it out and were scouring shelters and rescue centers until authorities confirmed her death late Friday.
“They were married for 20-something years. He’s having a difficult time accepting,” Breeding said of Walker’s husband.
“This is a devastating thing, and it’s happening to so many people,” Breeding said.
