Chinese Hackers Charged for Stealing Huge Troves of US Data

The hacking group targeted federal agencies like NASA, the Department of Energy, and the US Navy, as well as more than 45 technology companies in at least a dozen US states.
The US and the UK have charged two Chinese hackers for attacking targets in a dozen countries with the aim of stealing intellectual property and sensitive commercial data.
The hacking group, known as Advanced Persistent Threat 10 (APT 10), targeted US federal agencies like NASA, the Department of Energy, and the US Navy, as well as more than 45 technology companies in at least a dozen US states, the Justice Department announced today.
Zhu Hua and Zhang Shilong are charged with conspiracy to commit computer intrusions, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and aggravated identity theft. They «stole hundreds of gigabytes of sensitive data and information,» according to Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein, including «the names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, salary information, personal phone numbers, and email addresses of more than 100,000 Navy personnel.»
NASA Goddard Space Center and Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory were also targeted.
