CES is a big TV show. Not a big show on TV, but it’s a big show for TVs, especially big TVs.
Every major TV manufacturer shows their newest, biggest, and most advanced screens at CES, whether they plan to tell them in the spring, in a few years, or not at all. It’s where the highest resolutions and strangest form factors show up. It’s from whence the TVs of tomorrow come. And we were there to take lots of pictures.
The big TV makers showed off their latest 4K TVs, of course, but that’s only the start. 8K resolution is approaching fast, and we saw the first consumer 8K TVs at the show. TVs with four times the number of pixels as 4K TVs will soon be for sale, though there’s still little to no word on exactly when, or exactly how much they’ll cost.
The overwhelming majority of TVs are LCD (liquid crystal display), with LED (light-emitting diode) backlights. A good handful are OLEDs (organic light emitting diodes), incredibly thin and capable of displaying perfect black levels. Then there’s MicroLED, Samsung’s new consumer display technology, which uses tiny LEDs for each pixel, letting the company’s The Wall and The Window TVs scale up or down to theoretically any size or resolution.
