The 25th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG) is upon us and Australians will be able to watch all the action live.
This time of year sees award shows drop nominees left, right and centre, and you’re either a) nodding in agreement, b) disappointed they snubbed that obscure independent film no one but you and your friend has seen, or c) pretending you’ve watched them all and haven’t just spent the last week binge-watching Riverdale.
Either way, you’re probably invested enough to watch the ceremonies, and right now we’re here to talk everything SAG Awards.
The SAG Awards, now in its 25th year, has been around since 1995 and highlights achievements in both film and television (and stunts!). It’s often viewed as an indicator of success for the upcoming Academy Awards and is all around a pretty important event for all things film.
This years nominations for the SAG Awards varies very little from the Oscars, with acknowledgements for films such as Black Panther, Bohemian Rhapsody and A Star is Born and performances by Olivia Coleman (The Favourite), Lady Gaga (A Star is Born) and Viggo Mortensen (Green Book). The Favourite has certainly been a ‘favourite’ of the season, with Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz both up for Best Supporting Actress at the SAG and Academy Awards.
So if you fall under category ‘C’ from above, that might be a good place to start.
The SAG nomination list has also made up for some disappointing snubs from the upcoming Academy Awards – namely Emily Blunt for her brilliant performances in both Mary Poppins Returns (Lead Female Actor) and The Quiet Place (Supporting Female Actor), and the hugely popular Crazy Rich Asians, which is up for the big all-rounder SAG Award.
