The veteran lawyer leading the team defending former Nissan Motor Co. Chairman Carlos Ghosn said Wednesday that the case could damage Japan’s reputation as a place to do business while maintaining he is convinced of his client’s innocence.
Speaking at a news conference, Junichiro Hironaka said as the world has been closely watching the development of the case, he is concerned that it “could signal that Japan is unpredictable and excessive in what authorities are allowed to do to individuals in terms of conducting business.”
“I think the case for the rest of the world could leave the shocking impression that in Japan, even in a matter that should be discussed and handled internally by a company, such proceedings could turn into a criminal case and one could be detained out of the blue,” Hironaka told reporters at his first media appearance after his appointment.
